This is an article written by support worker Jamie Cheung. As a school leaver Jamie was looking to gain some work experience before heading to University. Prior to this the organisation had not employed school leavers but working with Jamie was such a pleasant experience that it has created opportunities for us to employ more school leavers.
From the very first step into Redford House, I was greeted with a warm welcome from both the staff and the service users. Ever since then I have consistently been met with a smile from all at Redcroft no matter how dull the weather is outside. These kind welcomes have made me feel at ease and relaxed about my first-ever job. The first week and a half I shadowed fellow support staff and learned how the staff aided and looked after the service users during the day. This allowed me to get to know the service users and feel more comfortable with taking them out by myself.
Over a short period of time, I began to understand how they reacted to various events and to ensure they have an enjoyable and safe day out. Working along side current employees also made me become friendlier with them, allowing me to gain confidence in asking them any questions I had about the job and how to deal with certain scenarios. Being by myself for the first time was nerve racking but that soon eased the more I got to know them. Each day spent at Redcroft is rewarding knowing how much I've helped the service users to go about their day to day lives. I hope this satisfaction continues to reward each and everyone that helps and is associated with this wonderful organisation.
Overall these experiences during my time at Redcroft have developed important social and communications skills. Furthermore, it has boosted my confidence and has given me a solid platform to start my university years.
